When the past and present collide, only love can decipher destiny's hidden pages.

Frederico "Fred" Quintela grew up in a small apartment in the Alfama, raised by a mother who never explained why his father's line on the birth certificate read "father unknown." At sixty-six, two months after her death, a lawyer is waiting at the foot of his steps with a sealed envelope: a letter, a photograph, and a name Fred has only ever seen on a contractor's paperwork. Francis Devereaux, who ran the Devereaux Group from Monaco for nearly forty years, was his father. Francis is long dead, and the family he left behind has no idea Fred exists. Now Fred wants the truth. All of it.

Dr. Elisa Figueroa spent thirty-one years at the Torre do Tombo, Portugal's national archive, and now takes private commissions. She has heard plenty of families claim great names, and she believes few of them. When Fred lays his mother's photographs and birth certificate on her table, she tells him the documents are genuine and the question is worth investigating. Together they follow a paper trail through company registries and notarial books and into the lanes of the Mouraria, where an old fado guitarist remembers a foreign businessman who once walked the streets alone. What they find is a father Fred never knew, and a bond between the two of them that neither of them planned.

The Devereaux family has noticed him. So has Trent Grimwald, an acquisitions man who has spent eighteen months working his way into the family's Foundation and who cannot afford a new heir the family might accept. His money offer to make the research stop meets a flat refusal, and the pressure that follows arrives as a press story calling Fred a fraud, a court filing in London, a man following Elisa home from the archive, and a threat against the old guitarist who was in the room when Francis made his choice. Fred has no fortune to claim and no plan to step back. Will the half-siblings he has only just met stand beside him?

In the fado houses of the Mouraria and the reading rooms of the Torre do Tombo, a man who has spent sixty-six years without his father's name finds a family, and a woman who has kept her distance from every client for decades finds she cannot keep it from him.
